Known Issues

A short list of quirks you might run into, and how to fix them.

The quick fix

Most issues with Boring Mode can be solved in one step: reload the page. If something looks off, give it a refresh before trying anything else.

1 Grayscale not applying after reopening Safari

When you close and reopen Safari, or when your device wakes from sleep, Boring Mode may not immediately re-apply the grayscale effect. The page might look fully colorful even though the extension is active.

How to fix: Reload the page. The grayscale effect will kick back in and your fade timer will resume.

2 Page still gray after turning Boring Mode off

Occasionally, after you toggle Boring Mode off for a site, the page may still appear desaturated.

How to fix: Reload the page. The grayscale filter will clear and colors will return to normal.

3 Fade timer can drift on background tabs

Safari limits what extensions can do in background tabs to save battery and memory. This means the fade timer may run slightly slower than real time if a tab has been in the background for a while.

Good to know: This is a Safari limitation, not a bug. The difference is usually small. Switching back to the tab brings the timer back on track.

4 Complex pages may feel slower

On resource-heavy pages like YouTube during video playback, the grayscale overlay can use more GPU resources than usual. You might notice slight lag or choppy scrolling.

How to fix: Reload the page, or navigate to a simpler page. You can also pause Boring Mode on that specific site if the slowdown is distracting.
